Markdown Reading Themes

Published March 2026

The right theme transforms markdown from raw text into something you actually want to read. ShowMeMyMD ships with four built-in themes — no configuration, no CSS editing. Pick one and start reading.

## System

System theme

Follows your macOS appearance automatically. When your Mac switches between light and dark mode, your markdown follows. Clean, neutral typography that stays out of the way.

Best for

People who want their viewer to match their desktop. If you use macOS auto-switching between light and dark mode on a schedule, System theme respects that automatically. No manual toggling required.

## Sepia

Sepia theme

Warm, paper-like tones that reduce eye strain during long reading sessions. The amber-tinted background softens contrast without sacrificing readability. Like reading a printed book on screen.

Best for

Reading long documentation, reviewing articles, and late-night reading without harsh contrast. If you spend hours in markdown files — project docs, technical specs, long READMEs — Sepia keeps your eyes comfortable.

## Nord

Nord theme

Cool blue-gray palette inspired by Arctic landscapes. An elegant dark theme that's become a favorite among developers. Muted tones, carefully balanced contrast, and a distinctive aesthetic that feels refined without being distracting.

Best for

Coding documentation, late-night README browsing, and developers who already use Nord in their terminal or editor. If your VS Code, iTerm, or Neovim is already Nord-themed, your markdown viewer can match.

## Solarized

Solarized theme

The legendary color scheme by Ethan Schoonover. Carefully designed for readability with precise contrast ratios and a scientifically selected palette. Solarized has been a staple in developer tooling since 2011 for good reason — it works.

Best for

Developers who already use Solarized in their terminal, editor, or IDE. Anyone who appreciates scientifically designed color palettes where every hue was chosen based on color theory and contrast relationships.

## Zero Configuration

No CSS editing. No configuration files. Just pick a theme and read.

All four themes are built into ShowMeMyMD. Switch between them from the menu bar — the change is instant. Every theme includes proper syntax highlighting for code blocks across 20+ languages, styled GitHub-Flavored Markdown tables, and full callout support.
